The Young Republicans have a great thing going. Financed from unvelievably deep pockets, if they want they can game the system forever and not really join the party, just join the "party". Or they can put on the brown shirt and jump right in, join the Republican party in heart and mind and relegate that voice of young reason, love and optimism to a deep dark pit of their soul. Apparently many of them do just that.
Young Republicans have infested every college campus in the United States and insist on presenting their pirates beacon to as many un-initiated as possible. The wide demographics of major college campuses mean they of course will gain some members. Some young minds will hear their message and navigate toward it, either because it reminds them of home or it stimulates another part of their psych. The former may eventually lose interest in the reinforcement, or maybe not. It is the latter who represent the greatest danger.
While both sub-groups of Young Republicans will add little or nothing to the American culture that is positive and growth oriented, the Young Republicans who join the party because they get an ego stroke are the most dangerous. They will sow discord and hate, rail against the American culture, and may become future domestic terrorists. The path this "psyched-up" group follows is a well-worn smooth and easy downhill track to harming their fellow citizens. The ego stroke, the stimulus they get from following Republican family values, can - and does - lead them to do terrible things. For most the resistance of civized life counters this natural Republican urge to physically harm the "other" and it only manifests itself with acts of intimidation. But when some are exposed to the right stimulus they will attack and even kill their fellow Americans in the name of their Republican values and a misguided sense of what it is to be an American.
Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, and the many voices of hate radio and web sites like The Fox Nation among others, provide this external stimulus. These actors know what they are doing and they know where their messages must go - to young minds. To Young Republicans. No sane adult will join the Republican party as it has become in the last 2 years (well, that is arguable of course). That is fact. The only hope the Republican party has is with an infusion of young malleable minds. The Young Republicans are their fountain of youth.
